One of the poems I have always returned to is ‘Firelight and Memory’ partly because of the way it sharpens my memory about my time at Tan-y-Garth farm and in the surrounding mountains of Snowdonia, and even more keenly, the way it breathes to life my intimate friendship with the artist Michael Higgins, but also more soberly because I would revisit the last stanza knowing that although it brought the poem to a decent conclusion I knew it did not fully drink from the deeper source of my experience of friendship with Michael. It did not say exactly what I wanted in exactly the way I wanted to say it.
I am now glad to say that twenty years later I have finally finished the poem in the way I so wanted to finish in the original. Such a blessed relief and a proper homage now to a man I deeply admired. – DW
